Dr. Richard S. Freeman is a board-certified ophthalmologist and one of the nation’s foremost specialists in adult strabismus and eye alignment. After a distinguished 37-year career in Minnesota, where he built one of the largest eye alignment practices in the country, Dr. Freeman now brings his unique expertise to Colorado Eye Consultants. He is among the very few ophthalmologists in the United States exclusively dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of adult strabismus and double vision, offering both surgical and non-surgical solutions.

Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Freeman graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell University with a degree in Neurobiology before earning his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon, his residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and advanced fellowship training at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, where he specialized in strabismus, pediatric ophthalmology, and ocular genetics.

Returning to Minnesota, Dr. Freeman became the state’s first full-time private pediatric ophthalmologist and quickly established himself as a leader in the field. He redesigned the state’s preschool vision screening program, launched multiple training programs, and personally corrected eye alignment in tens of thousands of patients. In recognition of his extraordinary support of orthoptics, he was honored as one of the few ophthalmologists ever named an Honorary Orthoptist by the American Association of Certified Orthoptists. His career has included invited lectures and surgical teaching across the globe, as well as participation in medical missions throughout Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Known for his warmth and humor, Dr. Freeman is beloved by patients for his engaging style, compassionate care, and trademark collection of colorful, cartoon-inspired ties. He believes strongly in educating patients and families, ensuring they feel valued and informed every step of the way.

Dr. Freeman and his wife, Linda—a retired communications professor—are thrilled to call Colorado home, where they enjoy being closer to family. They are especially delighted that he now practices alongside his daughter-in-law, Dr. Celine Satija, making him a proud “nepo-grandpa.” In his spare time, Dr. Freeman enjoys recovering from pickleball injuries, grandfathering, sit down comedy, and unsuccessfully trying not to embarrass his wife and family.
