Light Adjustable Lens

View Video

When choosing an IOL to replace your natural lens during cataract surgery, it’s important to weigh all available options. At Colorado Eye Consultants, our cataract surgeons are proud to offer the advanced Light Adjustable Lens to accomplish your vision goals after cataract surgery.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is an IOL with unique technology that allows you and your eye doctor to customize your vision after cataract surgery. This lens is the only IOL that will enable you to trial and personalize your vision after the procedure.

Besides allowing you to experience a customized outcome, the Light Adjustable Lens also offers other benefits. Choosing the Light Adjustable Lens can allow you to experience fewer visual disturbances, such as glare and halos, compared to other IOL options.

The Light Adjustable Lens can also offer you greater visual freedom, with reduced dependence on visual aids such as glasses and contact lenses after the procedure. Thanks to the Light Adjustable Lens, you are able to preview and select your desired vision after cataract surgery to match your personal lifestyle and hobbies.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The cataract surgery process with the Light Adjustable Lens is the same as cataract surgery with any other lens. However, what separates the Light Adjustable Lens from other IOLs is what happens after cataract surgery.

The Light Adjustable Lens is uniquely composed of a material that is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Once your eyes have healed from cataract surgery, you will need to return to your eye doctor’s office for a series of light treatments with the Light Delivery Device.

Treatment with the Light Delivery Device is non-invasive and lasts about ninety seconds. During treatments with the Light Delivery Device, your eye doctor applies UV light to your new Light Adjustable Lens, which will allow them to alter its shape. Changing the shape of the lens will transform your vision.

In order to achieve your desired vision, you will likely need multiple treatments with the Light Delivery Device. The total amount of light treatments required will depend on you and your eye doctor’s desired outcome.

During the light treatments, you will be placed in front of the Light Delivery Device, which will deliver UV light to your lens. Once the desired vision is achieved, your eye doctor will set the lens, and you will be able to experience improved vision and greater visual freedom.

Since your lens will be susceptible to changes when exposed to UV light during your recovery period, you will need to wear special UV protective glasses to protect your eyes against unwanted vision changes.

Who is a Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Most people are good candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens. Depending on your budget, lifestyle and vision goals, your eye doctor will help you determine whether or not the Light Adjustable Lens will be a good fit for you.

However, the Light Adjustable Lens may not be the best lens option for you. To determine if the Light Adjustable Lens is a good fit for you, your eye doctor at Colorado Eye Consultants will perform a thorough evaluation of your eyes and ask you about your vision goals during your cataract evaluation.

If you have certain eye conditions such as a retinal condition, a history of certain health conditions, or if you have uncontrollable eye muscle movement, you may not be a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens. If your eye doctor determines that it’s time for you to have cataract surgery and the Light Adjustable Lens is suitable for you, you will be able to schedule the procedure right away.
